The Marine Park Intermediate School Builders Club in Brooklyn, New York, continues to reach out to help those in need, both at home and abroad. During the month of October, club members collected money for UNICEF’s Project Uruguay.
This project was of special interest to Spanish teacher Maria Pastorini, who is from Uruguay and was able to make cross-cultural connections for the students, thus encouraging more involvement. To help raise funds, each homeroom class received a bright orange box and was encouraged by members to give generously to this worthy cause. Many members also contributed their own money as well.
“The generosity and support of our staff is what has helped to make the past four years so successful for the club,” says faculty advisor Regina Kiernan. “The staff is really behind the service projects that the students participate in and are always willing to help. Our goal was to exceed last year’s total of $200, and this year we were able to raise more than $300, which was really a thrill!”
Kieran has been the faculty advisor for the club since it began four years ago. Sponsored by Parkway East Kiwanis Club, the Builders Club’s upcoming events include filling holiday stockings for our troops overseas and a holiday toy drive to benefit military family from the Fort Hamilton Army Base.
