Inspired by their faculty advisor’s desire to promote autism awareness, the Builders Club at McKenzie Middle School selected the disorder as its service focus for the spring semester. Projects include helping special-needs children at Bethel College’s Autism Institute with their therapy sessions. With support from its sponsoring Kiwanis club of McKenzie, Builders raised more than $600 selling handmade fleece scarves. The money is being used to provide additional therapy for youths with autism.
Autism is a neurological disorder that affects multiple areas of development, including language and behavior No two instances of Autism are alike and the rate of reported autism cases is on the rise. One out of every 150 children is now diagnosed with the disorder.
Autism awareness has long been a passion for Rikke Curtis, the Builders Club advisor. Thanks to the McKenzie Middle School Builders Club for making it their passion as well.
